Who pays for a biohazard cleanup?
The responsability of hiring a professional biohazard company is on the property owners for the cost of cleanup, and not law enforcement or the coroner.
They will often hand out our number and company information to have us help you, since we are on their lists and we even get calls to do their biohazard cleanups in places such as police headquarters and police stations.
They will just tell you to call Exit Cleanup so you will be treated professionally and know that your situation is in the hands of the eperts.
The costs are often covered by homeowners, commercial, or auto insurance policies, depending on the nature of the incident. Basically the issue has to be a specific incident such as a crime, death or accident and not an ongoing situation such as a medical issue with multiple biohazard type issues made over time. Generally insurance will pay for a recent incident but not an ongoing situation such as incontanance issues over time.
Exit Cleanup can help you with your claim and talk to the insurance company directy when needed. We document everything and we help them process your claim. We have never had a claim denied because we are trusted and our Costs are in line for insurance standards.

How much does Biohazard Cleanup cost
Costs of a biohazard cleanup due to a death or accident can vary widely based on the severity of contamination, time elapsed, size of the area, and materials affected. It also depends on the company you call.
Information from our clients would tell you that some large National companies like “Aftermath” may charge more than 5 times (or more) from what we here at Exit Cleanup charge.
Meaning that we have done some jobs for 3-5 thousand dollars when big national companies gave an estimate of 26- 50 thousand dollars. Yes, you read that right!
We have had many conversations with clients and other Biohazard cleanup companies that have stated similar outrageous estimates which seem to come from mostly from the large national corporate and franchise type companies. So please do your homework on the company you choose when you need a biohazard remediation company. We encourage you to read our clients reviews and see that we are trusted, affordable and compassionate professionals.
From this point of this post we will ignore the very high National estimates and stick to the general range of costs we have heard of from our experience, other Biohazard companies, insurance adjustors and information from insurance companies. Biohazard cleanup is typically expensive compared to a maid service or typical cleaning. It is a very specialized and carries the weight of serious health risks due to the handling of unknown blood and bodily fluids. The typical range might be $1,000 to $7,000+, but everything depends on the details and damages on site, and how prolific the scene may be. Some cleanups can go past $10,000 if there is a lot of damages and time required to clean and disinfect the property and make it safe. A simple blood spill on the counter from a small cut is much less work than a death where the body was not discovered from several weeks. So each job is different.
In general Crime scene or biohazard remediation can cost anywhere from $500 to $1000+ per hour but that isn't the exact way that biohazard remediation companies like Exit Cleanup estimate our services. Like any service, there are multiple costs which add up to the total, such as Biohazard technician hourly rates which can be $150 to $300 per hour per technician. For Example: if the technician hourly rate is $250 per hour per technician, and you have 4 technicians the total technician rate is $1000 per hour just for the labor. (These should be highly trained technicians like we have at Exit Cleanup - OSHA, FEMA, IICRC, CDC Trained).
Another cost is PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for each technician. It can fluctuate from company to company which can increase the cost quite a bit.
At Exit Cleanup we charge a flat rate per technician for the day (with exceptions), whereas some companies charge that same rate many times a day, per technician which can add hundreds if not thousands to a total biohazard cleanup cost.
Another major cost for a biohazard / crime scene cleanup situation is the medical waste/ biohazard waste. Anything that is contaminated that can't easily be cleaned and disinfected such as clothing, carpets, bedding, flooring, mattresses or other property is typically put into "Bio boxes" or medical waste containers to be removed from the property and transported to a medical waste disposal company where the contents can be rendered biologically safe and destroyed. Things like mattresses can be cut up to remove the contaminated areas that go into the bio boxes and the rest (uncontaminated) will go to regular trash. By doing this, the areas containing the blood and bodily fluids (biologically contaminated) which could contain bloodborne pathogens (germs and viruses) as well as most of the odor causing materials, can be safely removed from the property. The cost of this can generally be anywhere from $200 to $1600 added to the overall cost. The more materials that are contaminated, the more Bio boxes may be needed.
Those are the bulk of the costs of a biohazard, crime scene or death cleanup. The other costs would be things like chemicals and disinfectants used, disposables, travel fees, and administration and reports costs. It adds up and can be very expensive since this is never an expected cost. Insurance often covers these costs but not everyone has insurance so its best to call in the local family owned experts, Exit Cleanup to help make these tragic situations a bit easier.

Does insurance cover the cost of a death, crime scene or biohazard cleanup?
This is a major concern. Because the cost of a biohazard cleanup is often unexpected and can be expensive. Homeowners or renters, commercial or vehicle insurance often does cover biohazard cleanup after deaths, suicides, crime scenes, or trauma—but not always. Its important to contact your insurance company and also know if you have a deductable.
In general, if it's in your policy, they do if it's a recent incident that just occured in the past week or so, as long as it's not and ongoing situation such as hoarding.
In an emergency situation such as a crime scene or blood spill, you do not need to call them first or wait until the insurance adjuster returns your call to start the cleanup process.
A professional company like Exit Cleanup always documents the process whether you use insurance or not. but if it's a death or crime you would ned to report it to the police and wait until they clear the situation for cleaning.
To file a claim you would need the insurance company information and policy number as well as your relationship to the policy holder if that person is deceased. A reputable company such as Exit Cleanup can help you file the claim and walk you through the process. We also offer a third party financing and payments for those without insurance coverage.

Who cleans up after a death, suicide, crime, accident or trauma?
The Police, Fire Department, EMTs or the Medical Examiners Office DO NOT clean up a crime or trauma scene when they have finished.
They have neither the time nor the expertise, and some are even forbidden to even refer you to a specialist in Biohazard or Crime Scene Cleanup like Exit Cleanup.
It is up to the property owner, victim or family to take on the clean up responsibility. Not an easy task at a time of tragedy and most people are not properly trained and don't have the equipment to do such a job.
Most property or home owners Insurance generally covers this type of clean up so that even though it's up to the property owner to be responsible for the clean up, they don't need to actually do the clean up. Leave that to the professionals. That's where we come in. Call EXIT Biohazard and Crime Scene Cleanup and we will help you in your time of need.
-
How quickly should cleanup begin, and what are the health risks of waiting?
Time is often critical. Unattended deaths, especially in warm conditions, can lead to decomposition, odor, pest infestations, and structural damage. Delays can also increase cleanup costs and make environments unsafe. If this situation has just occurred, it is important to start the cleanup process right away.
If this was an unattended death or crime scene which has had many days or weeks before it was discovered, it generally has become a much more difficult scene to clean and disinfect. It will have more damages to its surroundings, insect issues and serious odor issues.
At that point it is has most likely already done the maximum damage to the property so although it is in need of being cleaned up, the initial rush to have it cleaned isn't as critical.
Once discovered and the police and coroner have investigated and removed the body, the property will need to be cleaned and disinfected by a trusted professionally trained biohazard remediation company like Exit Cleanup.
-
What do I do if we have an emergency due to a death or trauma?
First, if this is a crime or accident, call 911 to report the situation and find safety. Now once the initial crime scene or accident has been addressed by the autorities and the coroner's office or ambulance has been called to remove the body (if there was one), you can start to think about what to do to get things moving back to a normal state.
The clean up of an accident, death or crime is a lot to handle so call us to start the process of cleaning things up for you. Call Exit Cleanup and be ready to give us the address, who we can expect to meet, the situation and insurance company and policy if you have it.
We can be on our way depending on the situation but we can not start until the scene is released from the police. Let us help you, we will take care of it so that you don't have to.

What to Do After a Crime Is Committed?
The longer a crime scene goes uninvestigated, the higher the risk of contamination. For the sake of justice and your own health and safety, make sure you are out of danger and immediately
- Call the Police/Ambulance: You must call the police as soon as you realize a crime has occurred. You might also request an ambulance if there is still an injured person on the scene.
- Cooperate with the Investigation: You must answer the investigators’ questions fully and truthfully so they can form a clear picture of what happened. If the criminal is at large, your information could help with their capture.
- Once the situation in under control and you need help to deal with the mess left behind, it’s important that you call the right cleaning company immediately before further damage is done.
- Hire a Crime Scene Cleanup Team: The authorities will not clean your property after they complete their investigation. They may even add to the mess with chemicals that they use their investigation such as Luminol or finger print powder. That’s when you’ll need to call EXIT Cleanup so we can take on the challenge of cleaning the property and get you back to normality as much as possible.
Proper crime scene cleanup takes place as soon as possible after the police finish their investigation of the scene. In order to contain the damages done by fluids and/or the spreading of chemicals, it is important to have us on the scene as soon as the scene is released. If residue and fluids are neglected, the building itself can sustain further damage. Bodily fluids absorb into wood, drywall, and carpeting. If not cleaned up promptly, blood can even absorb into the subfloor, where it can remain hidden, allowing toxic black mold to proliferate as well as odors to build and spread.
-
What Certifications are Required for Cleanup Crews?
Each state may have some added certifications or regulations but Professional biohazard technicians must follow strict regulations set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) when dealing with biohazardous waste and cleanup. While there isn’t a single mandatory national "crime scene or biohazard certification," reputable companies ensure their staff are certified in Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) cleanup, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage, and OSHA hazardous waste operations (HAZWOPER) and well as being familiar or passing other training from the CDC and Fema. more direct training from a company like Amdecon or the IICRC is highly recomended and mandatory for Exit Cleanup Technicians as well as our own in house training for "understanding construction" and emergency safety protocals.

Does insurance cover Hoarding cleanup?
In a short answer, No.
Hoarding is soemthing that insurance companies do not cover. Generally home owners insurance will cover Biohazard cleanup incidents such as a death, a crime situation or an accident that has blood, bodily fluids or feces.
Anything chronic over time is not typically covered such as a mold issue or hoarding.
-
Can anyone clean a crime scene?
The short answer is no. I'm not saying that you cant actually clean it, Im saying you cant leagally charge someone to clean it without proper training. Why? Because it's dangerous for you and others. If you are not properly trianed, like the highly trained experts at Exit Cleanup, you could make the matter worse.
A: OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogen Standards; 29CFR1910.1030, states that employees must be provided with information and training prior to dealing with blood or other potentially infectious material (OPIM), including:
- The Bloodborne Pathogen Standard
- Epidemiology, symptoms and transmission of bloodborne diseases
- Your facility’s exposure control plan (most business are required to have one)
- PPE (personal protective equipment) provided at no cost by the business
- Information on the Hepatitis B vaccine and information on how to receive it
- Provide a method to safely remove and/or store biohazardous waste
Only if your business complies with these actions and 29CFR1910.1030, can you allow an employee to cleanup a trauma scene. It requires a great deal of training and experience to rid the area of any potentially dangerous issues as well as any source of biological material that may have migrated to other areas of the property. It may have run under walls, through floors, into the subfloor or concrete. it will often look like a small area to clean but often has found its way under the tiles, through the subfloor and into areas not imagined where it's a lot more material than originally thought. If not cleaned, this will decay, smell and cause more problems to an already hard situation. That's why you call EXIT.
-
Why is professional blood cleanup important?
Blood isn’t just messy and unsightly; it’s also a health hazard. In the case of a crime scene it's possibly a strangers blood and you know nothing about their health or if they have any diseases. If you come into direct contact with blood, it can expose you to HIV, hepatitis, the flu and other dangerous pathogens. In addition, blood stains can be extremely difficult to remove and the blood and bodily fluids can get into walls and floors and become an odor problem as well as a health risk. You should never have to clean up blood yourself. It's what we do for a living. If you have experienced a biohazard from an accident, death, suicide, crime, or other traumatic situation on your property, contact a blood and biological waste cleaning service as soon as possible. Call Exit Cleanup!

What happens during a Biohazard cleanup?
When you call an emergency biohazard cleaning service, they will first ensure that the area is blocked off and cleared from any police investigations.
A professional Biohazard company such as Exit Cleanup who has been highly trained and has the experience of thousands of biohazard cleanups can explain the process and do the job professionally and compassionately.
Once on site and in proper PPE, are technicians will set up a permiter and focus on all surfaces affected by blood or bodily fluids. These areas will be thoroughly scrubbed, cleaned and disinfected.
Any materials or items that have been contaminated with blood or other biological hazardous materials will be removed, cleaned and disinfected.
If there are any items that cannot be cleaned, they will be removed from your home and disposed of in a safe and legal manner. We place contaminated items into Bio Boxes and all of our biohazardous waste is professionally gathered, contained properly, removed and destroyed by a Medical Waste handler.
Once all contaminated items or areas have been cleaned or removed and completely disinfected, the entire area is again checked and inspected to ensure all issues have been removed. We remove and pack out our equipment and take away the bio boxes and leave the property.
Our goal is to come in with compassion and professionalism in a quiet calm mannor and take on the burden of cleaning up the issue thoroughly and completely so that the family or property owner has the confidence to know that the job was done correctly, so they can focus on the other tasks that typically come with a biohazard issue.
-
Can’t I just let a regular cleaning or janitorial service clean up biohazardous waste?
Its very important to hire professionals who do this daily like Exit Cleanup. Otherwise thay can do more harm than good.
Imagine if they spread contaminants, and spread infected fluids or viruses to a larger area, or became infected themselves with any one of the many diseases we deal with in blood or from other instances. Blood can carry Hepatitis, HIV, Malaria or Ebola.
Most viruses spread from mishandled contaminants. A simple job for us as professionals, may turn into a huge and dangerous problem if attempted by amateurs.
We do a ton of training from things like
OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, 29CFR1910.1030 to training courses with FEMA, the IICRC and the CDC, to active training with the State police HAZMAT trianing facility.
You are ultimately responsible for whom you choose to clean up a biohazardous situation and most maid services or general janitorial or cleaning services will not do this kind of cleanup. It's not something they are prepaired for, trained for or even can handle.
That's why its bets to call in the experts at Exit Cleanup.

What is the proper name for cleaning up a crime scene?
This type of work goes by many names as there is no officially agreed upon name for this industry but it is known as: Crime scene cleanup, Crime and trauma scene clean up, Trauma and crime scene clean up, Emergency cleanup services, Biorecovery, Bio-Recovery, Forensic cleaning, Crime scene cleaning, Crime scene clean-up, Biocleaning, Bio-cleaning, Trauma and crime scene biological and infectious hazard clean up, Biohazard abatement, Biohazard mitigation, Death scene cleanup, Accident scene cleanup, And others.

-
What about a vehicle biohazard cleanup?
Yes, we can clean up any vehicle from any crime or accident involving blood or biological hazardous materials. Just like any property, we can clean it.
Automotive and body shops are not trained to clean up this biohazardous waste and what looks very simple to clean may not be. Don't be fooled, it's often a very complex cleanup. Blood and various materials have a way of getting in and around a vehicle.
Simple things such as towing the vehicle can easily cause things to migrate to other areas and if not inspected and cleaned, they will remain and cause problems.
The vehicle can't be handled or sold without professional clean up. Let us help you restore things back to normal. As complex as it seems, we can handle it.
-
Can I get a job cleaning up crime scenes?
Crime scene cleanup is inherently dangerous work and not for the faint of heart. Professional cleaners must undergo rigorous training.
They learn how to use personal protection equipment properly, and they must follow strict protocols during each job. These precautions are necessary to protect themselves and the people who will be in the area afterward.
We have very high standards and want our people to be safe and professional. If hired, you would be our company's representative so we take each new hire seriously. We invest in you with training and equipment and we value you as one of team. It's one of the most important decisions we make. That being said, if you are interested, please do not call, our phones are for emergencies.
Email us and we will talk to you about the job. How much do crime scene cleaners make? It depends on training and several factors.
Simply email us from our contact page and we will get back to you as soon as possible. If you feel that you are polite, smart, safe and can handle these serious and unusual situations, we want to hear from you.

How much is Hoarding cleanup?
Hoarding cleanup of a property can get expensive compaired to regular house cleaning because the first step isnt cleaning , its clearing. We typically refer to it as a hoarding clear out. Meaning that the goal is to remove as much clutter and debris as possible.
A hoarding house can range in complexity from simple clutter to full rooms of clutter and items as well as the added issues from possible rodents, pets, or insects. the varrying complexity can increase to cost of the clear out.
We here at Exit Cleanup have several fees we charge when doing any job, but in the case of hoarding our most expennsive cost would be the Hourly rate which depends on how many technicians we need on site.
We find an hourly rate is the fairest way to charge for these situations.
Hoarding situation costs generally range form $800 to $10,000+ depending on the complexity and amount of materials that need to be handled. Its mostly due to the amount of time required to get the job done with the number of technicians on hand.
A client also has to take into consideration things like storage , dumpsters, exterminators and biohazrd cleanup costs if needed.
We can often clear a full property in a day or two for most houses. Some take longer due to the contents within.
